Support for the Emotional and Physical Changes of Midlife
Perimenopause and menopause can bring changes that affect much more than your menstrual cycle. Shifting hormones, disrupted sleep, hot flashes, changes in energy, sexual health concerns, and other physical symptoms can also influence how you feel emotionally.
You may notice increased anxiety, irritability, sadness, difficulty concentrating, changes in confidence, or simply a sense that you don’t quite feel like yourself. For some women, symptoms of anxiety or depression appear for the first time during perimenopause. For others, existing mental health concerns may become more noticeable or difficult to manage.
My specialty in Holistic Mental Health, which combines physical and mental health, is uniquely designed to help manage the changes that come with perimenopause and menopause. These experiences are real, and they deserve to be taken seriously.
The Connection Between Physical Symptoms and Mental Health
Physical and emotional health are deeply connected during the menopause transition. Hormonal fluctuations can influence mood and emotional regulation, while symptoms such as insomnia, night sweats, fatigue, headaches, body changes, or changes in sexual functioning can create additional stress.
Many women are navigating significant life demands during this stage, including career pressures, relationships, parenting, caring for aging parents, changing roles, or questions about identity and aging. It can be difficult to determine where menopause ends, and everyday stress begins. Often, there isn’t a clear dividing line.
Physical changes like waking repeatedly from night sweats may leave you exhausted the next day. Exhaustion can make it harder to manage stress, regulate emotions, concentrate, or feel patient with the people around you. Anxiety can then make it harder to sleep, creating a cycle in which physical and emotional symptoms reinforce one another.
Sexual health changes, like vaginal dryness and reduce libido, can lead to anxiety and confusion that can affect a woman’s self-concept and their connection with their partner. As a therapist with over 20 years of experience working with women at all stages of life, I am comfortable talking about sexual issues and feelings about these changes. Together we can find a better path forward for you.
